Treatment for Acute Myelogenous LeukemiaMost patients with acute myelogenous (myeloid) leukemia (AML) receive treatment very quickly upon diagnosis, usually within days or weeks of the diagnosis. What follows are descriptions of some of the types of treatments your doctor may recommend. Please keep in mind that treatment of acute myelogenous (myeloid) leukemia recommended in your case will depend on factors unique to your diagnosis, such as the subtype of leukemia, your age, and your overall health. Be sure to discuss any questions you have about your treatment regimen with your doctor. Acute myelogenous (myeloid) leukemia treatment usually has two phases. The first phase of treatment is known as “induction” or “remission induction” therapy. The purpose of this phase of treatment is to kill leukemia cells in the blood and bone marrow, and to put the cancer into remission. The second phase of treatment is called “maintenance therapy” or “post-remission therapy.” It begins after the leukemia has gone into remission. The purpose of this second phase of therapy is to kill any remaining leukemia cells to prevent a relapse of the cancer. What follows is a general description of some of the treatments your doctor may discuss with you. Whether a particular treatment is recommended will depend on factors unique to your case. Be sure to discuss any questions you have about your treatment options with your doctor.
