Multiple MyelomaMultiple myeloma is a rare cancer of the plasma cell (a type of blood cell) that grows out of control in the bone marrow. Multiple myeloma may also be called plasma cell myeloma, myelomatosis, or Kahler’s disease. Multiple myeloma typically occurs in older people, with the average age of 65 years at the time of diagnosis. In some cases, the cause of multiple myeloma can be related to benzene exposure. There are several types of multiple myeloma, including smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM), plasma cell leukemia, nonsecretory myeloma, osteosclerotic myeloma (POEMS syndrome), solitary plasmacytoma (also called solitary myeloma of the bone), and extramedullary plasmacytoma. These types of multiple myeloma have some differing characteristics and symptoms.
