Post-Remission Chemotherapy

Once the patient is in remission, additional treatment is necessary to increase the chance of a long remission or cure for the disease. While in remission, small numbers of leukemia cells may remain in the bone marrow at such low levels that they are not easily detectable. Post-remission treatment can help to prevent these cells from growing back and causing a recurrence of the disease.

The type and intensity of post-remission chemotherapy will depend on a number of factors, including the result of the cytogenics testing at the time of diagnosis, the age of the patient, and the patient’s response to the treatment used.

In many cases, a patient may undergo a repeated course of post-remission chemotherapy. These treatments are often similar in intensity to the induction chemotherapy and require a hospital stay of a few weeks.
