Surgery for CML Patients

In cases where the spleen has become enlarged as a result of CML, your doctors might recommend a “splenectomy”, which is a surgery to remove the spleen. The spleen is an organ that filters blood, removes bacteria, and makes and stores blood. It is located in the upper left side of the abdomen, behind the stomach. Laparoscopic surgery may be used. In this procedure, a small incision is made on the left side of the waist and a tiny video camera is inserted. The video camera allows the surgeon to “see” the affected area. Instruments for performing the surgery are inserted into two or more other small incisions. The surgeon operates using the instruments to remove the spleen.
