Gleevec (Imatinib) is a relatively new cancer drug available for patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia. It affects the molecular basis of CML by blocking an abnormal protein that causes the development of more granulocytes or blasts than the body needs. Gleevec is taken in tablet form. Side effects can include fluid retention, nausea, diarrhea, muscle and bone pain, and rash.
