Immunosuppressive Drug Therapy for Aplastic Anemia

Immunosuppressive drug therapy is usually the standard initial treatment for older patients with aplastic anemia and for younger patients who do not have a related, matched donor. It is believed that aplastic anemia occurs when the patient’s immune system reacts against the bone marrow, interfering with its ability to make blood cells. Immunosuppressive drugs help to reduce the immune response, which in turn may allow the bone marrow to once again function properly. These drugs are usually given intravenously and require a short hospitalization.

The most frequently used immunosuppressive drugs to treat aplastic anemia are antihymocyte globulin (ATG) and cyclosporine. Steriods may also be administered together with these drugs. Side effects of ATG may include fever, chills, hives, rash, joint pain, and muscle aches. As an allergic reaction to ATG is also possible, the patient will be given a skin test to determine if they may be allergic or are susceptible to developing an allergy to the drug. Cyclosporine may result in such side effects as high blood pressure and kidney damage.
