Interferon Alpha is a type of immunotherapy widely used to treat chronic myelogenous leukemia patients, especially in the chronic phase. Interferon alpha is a protein that the body typically produces during viral infections. It is administered as a small injection under the skin, using a very thin needle. Your doctor may prescribe interferon injections to be given once a week or more often. You can usually give yourself injections (or have a family member do so) at home. Interferon can cause flu-like symptoms, such as fever and chills, headaches, joint and muscle pain, and fatigue. A mild painkiller before the injection may help to alleviate these symptoms.
