Investigational Treatments for Aplastic Anemia

What follows is a description of new treatments that are currently in the investigational stages, meaning that they are considered experimental and may not yet be available for general use. Discuss these and any other treatment options with your doctor if you are interested in exploring them. Your doctor might recommend you as a candidate for a clinical trial for one of these or another investigational treatment.

Alternative types of transplants

  • Peripheral stem cell transplants: This alternative form of transplant uses healthy stem cells from the blood of the donor, instead of cells from the bone marrow.

  • Mini-transplants: Mini-transplants use a less toxic pre-treatment regimen than standard bone marrow transplants. This experimental transplant is more frequently used in older patients.

  • Cord blood transplants: This form of transplant uses stem cells from the umbilical cord blood of newborn babies.

  • Autologous transplants: This is a form of bone marrow transplant where the patient serves as his or her own donor.

Other experimental treatments

Other investigational treatments for aplastic anemia include the use of marrow stimulants called “cytokines” and the use of hormones called “androgens”.
