A “stage” of a cancer refers to how far the multiple myeloma may have progressed. Knowing the stage of the cancer is also helpful in determining your treatment options. Here is a brief description of the stages for multiple myeloma:
Stage I: Laboratory findings indicate a low myeloma cell mass
Stage II: Laboratory findings indicate a myeloma cell mass higher than Stage I but lower than Stage III. Stage IIA refers to patients with normal or near-normal kidney function, and Stage IIB refers to patients with abnormal kidney function.
Stage III: Laboratory findings indicate a high myeloma cell mass.
