Immunosuppressive Drug Therapy for MDS

Immunosuppressive drug therapy may be used to treat myelodysplastic syndrome patients in some cases. Immunosuppressive drugs help to reduce the immune response, which in turn may allow the bone marrow to once again function properly. This form of drug therapy is used most often to treat patients with hypoplastic MDS, which closely resembles aplastic anemia. It may also be used to treat the RA subtype of MDS. These drugs are usually given intravenously, and require a short hospitalization. The most frequently used immunosuppressive drugs used to treat these subtypes of MDS are antihymocyte globulin (ATG) and cyclosporine.
