What follows is a description of new treatments for myelodysplastic syndrome that are currently in the investigational stages, meaning that they are considered experimental and may not yet be available for general use. Discuss these and any other treatment options for MDS with your doctor if you are interested in exploring them. Your doctor might recommend you as a candidate for a clinical trial for one of these or another investigational treatment.
Alternative types of transplants
Peripheral stem cell transplants: This alternative form of transplant uses healthy stem cells from the blood of the donor, instead of from the bone marrow. This may be a viable alternative for older adults with MDS who do not have a suitable matched donor for a bone marrow transplant.
Mini-transplants: Mini-transplants, also called non-myeloablative transplants, use a less toxic pre-treatment regimen than standard bone marrow transplantation. This experimental transplant is more frequently used in older patients with MDS.
Autologous transplants: This is a form of bone marrow transplantation where the MDS patient serves as his or her own donor.
