Investigational Treatments for CML

What follows is a description of new treatments for chronic myelogenous leukemia that are currently in the investigational stages, meaning that they may not yet be available for general use. Discuss these and any other treatment options with your doctor if you are interested in exploring them. Your doctor might recommend you as a candidate for a clinical trial for one of these or another investigational treatment.

Peptide vaccine: This experimental vaccine is showing promise for producing a complete molecular remission in some patients. The vaccine is made from a “PR1 peptide,” a small part of a protein found inside leukemia cells. The vaccine may produce an immune response against the cancer, directing immune T-cells to kill the leukemia. In early studies, it also appears to provide long-term protection to patients.

Arsenic trioxide: This type of chemotherapy is currently being tested in clinical trials for treatment of the accelerated phase of chronic myelogenous leukemia.
